Airlines
The largest airline - flies between all main cities and many regional airports.

Low-fares airline that flies between the main cities.
Inter-island ferries
The main state-owned ferry service between Wellington at the bottom of the North Island, and Picton at the top of the South Island. You can take your car with you.

Often a bit cheaper than Interislander, with a terminal closer to Wellington’s main train station and city centre. You can take your car here as well.
Trains
These are the main intercity rail routes in New Zealand. They’re slow, so they’re not a good option for travelling, but they are very comfortable and go through some exceptional scenery. If you have the time, they’re a great attraction in and of themselves.
