Accommodation

Visitor accommodation is a bit different in New Zealand, thanks to the generally relaxed approach to life! There aren’t hundreds of midscale hotels on every highway corner like in Europe and North America, but there are still plenty of options for every budget and comfort point.

Hotels may or may not be full-service, so if there’s anything in particular you need it’s best to check with the hotel before booking. The large international chains have plenty of options in the big cities - Accor, Best Western, Clarion, Comfort, Copthorne, CordisCrowne Plaza, DoubleTree, EconoLodge, Fairmont, Four Seasons, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Hyatt, Ibis, Intercontinental, Mercure, Millennium, Novotel, Peppers, Pullman, Ramada, Rydges, Sofitel, and Wyndham.

Outside of the bigger cities and tourist spots, hotels are fewer and you won’t find the international chains. Local chains that are known for quality and comfort include Adina, BreakFree, Distinction, Heartland, Quest, Scenic, Sudima and Travelodge.

Motels, motor inns and motor lodges are by far the most numerous accommodation options in New Zealand, and can range from the cheap and cheerful to the incredibly luxurious. Motel rooms generally come equipped with a small kitchenette, but most do not have bathtubs, with standalone showers being much more common.

The vast majority of motels are independently operated, so look for a location's Qualmark star rating as well as TripAdvisor. Some chains do exist, with Asure, Bella Vista and Golden Chain being the most prominent.

Airbnb is available across New Zealand and is a good option. Other local places to look for private holiday rentals include Holiday Houses and Bookabach - ‘bach’ (pronounced batch) is a northern New Zealand word for a holiday house on the coast. In the south, these are called ‘cribs’.have specific parts already linked and say that it is specific

Finally, holiday parks are a fun option for a proper New Zealand experience. Most will have comfortable and well-appointed cabins and static caravans, with pools, outdoor activities and shared cooking and barbecue facilities. Good holiday park operators include Top 10, Tasman Holiday Parks, and Holiday Parks New Zealand
